The U.S. AIDS epidemic is now heavily concentrated in African-American communities. There are currently more African-Americans living with AIDS than non-Hispanic whites and the percentage is increasing rapidly. African-American adolescents are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, and reaching them as they begin to become sexually active has the prospect of lowering the spread of the disease. In this project, ACI is serving as the coordinating center in a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Mental Health and four other research sites to test a media strategy to encourage vulnerable youth to protect themselves from STIs.
