Overview

This issue brief, updated in 2016, reviews what is known about the best ways to prevent drug abuse in middle and high school youth with particular attention to the recent interest in mandatory random drug testing, or MRDT. It begins by reviewing the legal history of MRDT, then turns to the scientific evidence regarding the practice, and ends with a consideration of alternative strategies for educating adolescents about the harms of drugs.
