Julia Lynch

I am a Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. I hold a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. from Harvard University. My research focuses on the politics of population health, social policy, and inequality in the rich democracies, particularly western Europe. Recent books include "Getting Better: The Policy and Politics of Reducing Health Inequalities" (2025), "The Unequal Pandemic: COVID-19 and Health Inequalities" (2021), and "Regimes of Inequality: The Political Economy of Health and Wealth" (2020). I am faculty co-director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation, and serve on the advisory boards of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, the European Studies Institute, and the Bioethics minor. I am working on a project investigating variation in how governments collect and report sociodemographic data about their citizens in order to “see” health inequalities. I am also collaborating with APPC research director Dan Romer on a multimethod study of how Americans understand the economic processes leading to inequalities. I serve on the editorial boards of Perspectives in Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of European Social Policy, Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, and the new journal Health Politics.
